The sanding of wood – a science in its own right
“Wood is just a one-syllable word, but it represents a world full of beauty and wonder.”

It could not have been described more aptly than Theodor Heuss did here. In the thousands of years of its usage as (building) material wood has lost nothing of its attraction.
Wood is alive. It is available in many different varieties, is ecologically sound and, last but not least: Wood is beautiful!
However: its complexity, its biodiversity and individuality make wood also a demanding, if not the most demanding material we know.
Woodworking, respectively the sanding of wood, requires a high degree of experience and knowledge.
Sanding is the decisive machining step on the way to a perfect finish.
By sanding wood surfaces are smoothened, grains are carved out and relieves are brought out.

During sanding four decisive wood properties affect the sanding process:
The hardness: With few exceptions, hard woods have a shorter grain pattern than soft woods, which also improves the machining properties.
The humidity: The higher the water content of the wood, the higher is the probability that the abrasive will clog during the sanding process.
Inorganic inclusions can have significant effects on the sanding properties of the wood. For example, inclusions can cause wear or even the complete break out of the abrasive grain.
Wood contents like resins, fats and oils let the abrasive clog and become sticky more quickly.
These are only a few important parameters that have an effect on the selection of the appropriate abrasive. Besides the kind of application, all these factors determine what backing and what type of grain with which coating density is used or whether an additional special coating is necessary.
