Backing

Regarding coated abrasives it is differentiated between the following backing materials:

• paper 
• cloth 
• polyester 
• abrasive fibre 
• or a corresponding mixture of the above mentioned materials 

What backing is used depends on the specific demands on the abrasive used and the material to be worked.

The following criteria can be important for selecting the backing:

• tearing strength
• flexibility 
• resistance to heat 
• water resistance 
• hand or tool application 
• What abrasive grain is used?
• What base coat is used?

Backings are divided into the weight class A-F according to their mass per unit of area (g/m²).

With increasing mass the tensile strength also increases.
