Fibre disc production covering more than 100 football fields every year

Klingspor's fibre discs are the perfect choice for coarse and fine sanding applications as well as for rust removal on metal, for deburring and for finishing weld seams. When combined with a matching backing pad, abrasive fibre discs are also used for the fine sanding of metals. Other benefits offered by Klingspor's fibre discs include minimal clogging, above average service life, a uniform scratch pattern and cool grinding. These advantages have turned fibre discs into one of Klingspor’s top sellers - with an annual production output that would span more than 100 football fields.

Abrasive vulcanised fibre discs: The name is in the backing material

Grouped in the category of coated abrasives, fibre discs owe their name to the vulcanised fibre backing material used for their production: a composite material made of cotton and cellulose fibres. Lightweight, yet durable, the backing combined with the closely coated abrasive grain made of

  • Corundum
  • Zirconia alumina
  • Ceramic aluminium oxide

forms the basis of high-performance discs that allow for effortless work on even the most demanding surfaces.

Comprehensive product range for the most diverse applications

Klingspor’s abrasive fibre discs are marked by a high stock removal rate and long service life as well as by an optimum scratch pattern. The vast range of available grit sizes lets the user find the tool that is ideal for each and every one of their applications. Fields of application include:

  • Stainless steel
  • Steel
  • Metal
  • Aluminium

The additional application of active agent coatings such as the so-called multibond and ACT technology extends the range of application for the abrasive fibre discs even further and increases their useful life substantially.

Abrasive fibre discs with multibond, such as type CS 570, are ideally suited for work on stainless steel. Multibond coatings provide for cool grinding and prevent heat tinting.

Advanced Coating Technology has been applied to all Klingspor fibre discs that bear the “ACT” acronym in their name, e.g. FS 964 ACT. During metal processing, this technology will provide for enhanced grain adhesion. This will improve the life of the abrasive fibre disc dramatically.

Matching backing pads round out the selection of fibre discs

The use of the fibre discs on an angle grinder requires that the discs be attached to a backing pad. The backing pads included in Klingspor's range of fibre discs differ in their hardness and surface structure and therefore in their field of application. The nature of the application has a key impact on the choice of the right backing pad.

The best choice for a uniform scratch pattern during fine and surface sanding is the medium hard ST 358 with its smooth surface. Thanks to its lower hardness compared to the ST 358 A, it contours well to the workpiece and is equally well suited for working on contours and the rounding of edges.

Hard and offering greater stability, the ST 358 A with its ribbed surface delivers a stock removal rate which exceeds that of the ST 358 by a margin of 30%. This performance makes this hard and ribbed backing pad the recommended option for all types of work that call for great stock removal, including

  • Coarse sanding and grinding
  • Edge bevelling
  • Deburring
  • Weld seam finishing

Hole patterns, storage and safety of fibre discs

Klingspor’s standard selection of fibre discs comes with a round hole or a star-shaped hole. Other hole patterns are available on request as well thanks to state-of-the-art laser cutting technology.

Abrasive fibre discs made by Klingspor have been tested according to the guidelines of the oSa directives and are guaranteed to comply with European safety standard EN 12413. For safe use and optimum sanding results for the long term, storing the fibre discs correctly is absolutely critical.

To keep the moisture and temperature-sensitive fibre discs from bulging, it is recommended that they be stored at a temperature of 18 to 22° centigrade and at a relative humidity of 45% to 65%. Exposure to direct sunlight must be avoided to prevent the fibre discs from drying out and becoming brittle. An effortless way to store and take out the discs at the workplace is offered by fibre disc dispenser FS 555, which holds up to 100 fibre discs.
